Joan Richmond

Joan Richmond is Senior Lecturer of English. A native of Bellville, Ohio, in Richland County, she earned a BA in English and History from Tarleton State University (Texas) in 1986, an MA from TSU in English in 1991, and is ABD from the University of Texas at Arlington, with emphasis in Rhetoric, Composition, and Critical Theory.

A graduate of Clear Fork High School, Richmond started her career in journalism at Ohio University, then moved to Texas in 1982 where she worked as a reporter and photographer on the daily newspaper Stephenville Empire-Tribune. After finishing her MA, she taught for a decade in the English Department at Tarleton, and then her family moved back to Ohio, where she began teaching at Ohio State University Mansfield in the autumn of 2000. Richmond has served a term as President of the Associated Faculty at Ohio State Mansfield, as well as on various committees including the Executive Committee and the Ecolab Committee. She primarily teaches first-year writing, second-year writing, introduction to fiction, and Environmental Citizenship.

Richmond is married to Reed Richmond, Ashland native and public health educator at Richland Public Health. They run Meadow Rise Farm, LLC, a certified organic market farm in Bellville, selling locally through a CSA and at Clintonville Farmers Market in Columbus. Richmond has served as president of the Heart of Ohio chapter of the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association and has served on the OEFFA state board of directors. She has made several presentations at OEFFA’s annual conference, as well as participating in various farm programs and farm tours.

They have one daughter, Dr. Catherine Stoner (Isaac), an Ohio State graduate and veterinarian at the Fredericktown Veterinary Clinic and two granddaughters, Mariah and Alivia. They also have two dogs, three cats, and an occasional small flock of comedic chickens.
