Raising support for the Student Emergency Fund at Richland Gives

As part of Richland Gives, The Ohio State University at Mansfield is raising support for the Student Emergency Fund – it provides emergency financial relief for our students who are in need of vital resources or experience emergency unforeseen expenses. These funds provide financially vulnerable students with an opportunity to continue their education by providing funds for medical bills, living expenses, car repairs, or other expenses. Emergencies may prohibit a student from reaching their full potential at Ohio State Mansfield, and these emergency funds may provide life-changing support for our students.

Sam Ratvasky, Ohio State Mansfield’s Student Representative on the Mansfield Board, said, “The Student Emergency Fund is a lifesaver for students. Students are already faced with challenges such as rigorous curriculums and countless responsibilities. When things go wrong, students may be unable to support themselves and their education. This fund helps students achieve their goals.”

The 3rd year Engineering Technology major continued, “I personally received support from the Student Emergency Fund when my laptop suddenly stopped working, and I had to quickly purchase a new one that could handle my engineering software, which was quite expensive. The Student Emergency Fund helped me through the situation.”

Jeff Hutchison, a 4th year social work major, was a recipient of the Student Emergency Fund in Autumn 2022. Without receiving those funds, Jeff would not have been able to continue his studies – he said, “I had no support to assist with several life emergencies, and the Student Emergency Fund at Ohio State Mansfield allowed me to stay in school and stay involved.”

Set to graduate next year, Jeff is already working in his field as a mentor and group facilitator with Advocates for Families in Ashland, OH.

Gracyn Shupp, a 4th year social work major, has also been a recipient of the Student Emergency Fund. When health issues arose, she was unable to work as many hours needed to pay for her tuition, and Student Emergency Fund allowed her to stay enrolled and work towards graduating this spring. Gracyn said, “As a full-time student with a disability, I’m very thankful this grant exists. It has helped me to stay in school and focus more on my health.”
