When Unexpected Challenges Threaten a Student's Education, Ohio State Mansfield Steps In

Student Emergency Fund helps students navigate financial crises and stay on track toward graduation

For students working toward a college degree, the journey is often filled with determination, sacrifice and careful financial planning. But sometimes, all it takes is one unexpected expense to put years of hard work at risk.

A car breaks down. A medical bill arrives. A family emergency suddenly changes a student's financial circumstances.

What might seem like a temporary setback can quickly become a decision between paying for basic necessities and continuing an education.

At The Ohio State University at Mansfield, the Student Emergency Fund exists to help students navigate those critical moments, providing financial assistance when unexpected challenges threaten their ability to remain enrolled and work toward graduation.

As the campus launches its Richland Gives campaign on November 1, university leaders hope to raise awareness of this important resource, and the difference community generosity can make in a student's future.

"The Emergency Fund is designed to give quick, easy-to-access funds to students who face a sudden need," said Jason Opal, dean and director of Ohio State Mansfield. "That could be a broken car, an unexpected medical bill, or a family issue."

"In those moments, it is essential that we can move in quickly with aid to get the student through the crisis."

When Life Interrupts the Plan

For many college students, financial challenges extend well beyond tuition and textbooks. Students often straddle a delicate balance of rent, food, cars, and tuition.  These everyday living costs create significant pressure, particularly for students balancing coursework with employment and family responsibilities.

Opal said some of the most difficult situations occur when an emergency causes that financial support students have relied upon to disappear.

In some cases, the consequences can threaten their ability to continue attending classes.

One Ohio State Mansfield faculty member recalled helping a student whose unexpected housing expenses forced them to take on additional work hours while trying to complete a degree.

As the student's employment responsibilities increased, attendance and assignments began to suffer.

Concerned about the student's academic progress, the faculty member reached out and learned about the financial hardship. After connecting the student with the Student Emergency Fund, assistance helped relieve the immediate pressure.

The student was able to reduce work hours, remain housed and ultimately graduate on time.

Without that support, the faculty member feared the student might fail a course and delay graduation, creating an even greater financial burden.

The experience illustrates how relatively modest financial assistance, provided at the right moment, can help protect a student's educational future.

Opal emphasized that students who face financial barriers are often working extraordinarily hard to achieve their educational goals.

"I mostly want to express how driven and determined our students are," he said.

"The students are scrambling and striving and doing everything they can. It's hard to imagine a worthier group."

Preventing a Temporary Crisis From Becoming a Permanent Setback

While a financial emergency may last only a few days or weeks, its impact on a student's education can be much longer.

For some students, stepping away from college to address an immediate financial need can make returning to school increasingly difficult.

"Because students who have to stop their education often cannot return," Opal said. "Life happens too quickly. Other responsibilities pile up.”

The Student Emergency Fund helps address that risk by providing timely assistance when students have limited alternatives.

Emergency grant applications are reviewed by a committee that meets regularly to assess students' needs and determine how available resources can best be distributed.

"Donations go directly into a fund that we pay out on the basis of regular meetings of the Emergency Grant Committee," Opal explained.

That committee also can then continue to support that student with check-ins and many times other support like financial budgeting, referrals to another agency, or other form of intervention.  For students facing immediate financial uncertainty, the assistance offers more than help with an unexpected bill. It provides reassurance that their university recognizes the challenges they face and is committed to helping them succeed.

"It's a morale boost. It's also a moral issue," Opal said.  We should have the students' backs, and when we do so, they feel and do better."

A Community Investment in Student Success

Through the Richland Gives campaign, Ohio State Mansfield is inviting the community to help strengthen this safety net for students who may be just one unexpected expense away from an educational setback.

Donations to the Student Emergency Fund provide resources that can be directed toward students experiencing urgent financial needs, helping them remain focused on their studies and long-term goals.

Opal said the impact of a contribution should not be measured solely by its dollar amount.

"I would give them my word that we will make good use of every cent," he said. "I would tell them that every cent, at these critical moments, makes a dramatic difference."

For the student who received help with housing expenses, that difference meant completing a degree on schedule.

For another student, it might mean repairing a vehicle needed to travel to campus, covering an unexpected medical expense or meeting an essential living expense during a family crisis.

Each situation is different, but the goal remains the same: helping students continue moving forward when circumstances beyond their control threaten their education.

As Ohio State Mansfield looks to begin its Richland Gives campaign, Opal expressed appreciation for the community's commitment to supporting local students and their futures.

"We are so grateful to be a part of such a strong and caring community," he said, promising that the university and, above all, its students will make the community proud.

For students determined to earn a college degree, one unexpected financial crisis should not have to become the end of that journey.

And through the Student Emergency Fund, community generosity can help ensure it doesn't.
