Mansfield Campus dean and director, Norman Jones, selected as vice provost and dean for undergraduate education
Ohio State University Executive Vice President and Provost Melissa L. Gilliam recently announced that Norman Jones, dean and director of Ohio State Mansfield, will now serve as vice provost and dean for undergraduate education.
In the new role, Jones will lead the vision for challenging and transformative academic experiences for Ohio State undergraduate students on all Ohio State campuses, and be responsible for guiding the development of undergraduate educational experiences and outcomes.
Jones’ appointment is subject to approval by the Board of Trustees and would begin on July 1.
Faculty members at Ohio State Mansfield acknowledged Jones’ well documented leadership accomplishments. Dr. Joseph Fahey, Associate Professor of Theatre, said, “We have benefited in countless ways from your service to our campus and our community, and I know you will continue to support us in your new position”
Joan Richmond, a lecturer in the English department, said, “The only thing I can think of that would be better for the Mansfield campus than having Norman here with us is to have him serve in this new position. I’m both a bit sad and thrilled.”
Ohio State Mansfield Board of Trustees president, Charla Irvin, echoed the same sentiment, stating, “Norman Jones has been an amazing dean at our beautiful Mansfield campus. All you have to do is look at the accomplishments under his leadership. I am thrilled for Norman and wish him the best in his new role. I have no doubt his passion will continue to shine.”
Under the leadership of Jones, the Mansfield campus has set the stage for science and technology education in north central Ohio. One of Jones’ greatest points of pride has been establishing the BSET program, and in addition building a new organic chemistry lab, facilitating increased retention rates for underserved and historically underrepresented students, and serving with the University Innovation Alliance.
These accomplishments have guided Jones to now serve as vice provost and dean for undergraduate education for all of Ohio State’s campuses. While the Mansfield campus will certainly miss Jones, he now will advocate for the campus on a greater platform to further achieve the land grant mission.
Vice Provost and Dean of University Libraries Damon Jaggars has provided interim leadership for undergraduate education this academic year. Gilliam said a leadership transition plan for Ohio State Mansfield is being developed, and details will be shared in the coming weeks.
