About the Internship Program

In an effort to enhance student retention and retain talented graduates in north central Ohio in a variety of academic areas, North Central State College and The Ohio State University proudly
announces our brand new Internship Program. In this program, we will work collaboratively to place student interns in local “for profit” businesses and industries, establishing greater linkage between local students, employers, as well as Mansfield campus higher education institutions.

The heart of this initiative is to analyze existing student talents alongside specific employer needs, and provide both parties with an ideal situation through the Internship Advisory Council. The mission of the Internship Advisory Council is to guide, promote, advise and support OSU Mansfield & NC State College Career Offices in their efforts to create and implement an internship program to serve the students and businesses in north central Ohio.

Based on research and comparable programs, our area employers will see a number of results from these efforts. Those employers will, at minimum, gain short-term assistance from talented individuals. Many employers enjoy the increase in productivity, and bringing fresh, innovative perspectives into their organization. While offering students real world experience, employers can observe how those potential employees might work in their business. In fact, more than 50% of interns accept an employment offer from their host company.

Employers will be matched with candidates selected from a highly motivated pool of student talent. Those students are seeking to discover an ideal career, and the application and growth of personal responsibility and job skills. Along the way, they will be seeking academic applications and credit, networking opportunities, discovery of their talents, and ultimately, a full-time career path.

 

Defining an Internship

studentsAccording to the National Association of College and Employers, an internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting.

Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.



Components of a Successful Internship Experience:

  • The experience has a defined beginning and end and includes a job description with desired qualifications.
  • Clearly defined learning objectives and goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework.
  • Supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
  • Regular performance feedback provided by the experienced supervisor.

 

Internships can be paid or unpaid opportunities. If you are offering an unpaid internship, you should familiarize yourself with Fair Labor Standards Act guidelines.
