“Students Making a Realistic Transition” (SMART) is a transition program for first year students of color. The goal of SMART is to prepare these students for academic and social success by facilitating a realistic transition from high school to college. What does a ‘realistic’ transition look like? It’s a transition in which students adjust to the expectations and rigors of academic life within a collegiate atmosphere while maintaining a healthy social and personal life. It’s the foundation young people need to transition into successful adulthood. SMART is a group effort: parents, faculty and staff working together to support our students of color in being all that they can be!
How can SMART help me?
- By assisting you in identifying resources (people, places, things), you will become proactive in seeking support.
- You will begin to experience a sense of community as you and other students begin to learn, work and have fun together!
- You will gain confidence as you begin to negotiate your new college environment and experience academic and social successes.
