The Ohio State University at Mansfield

Placement Testing - Spring 2018

Math and English Placement Testing is completed online and will not be available on the day of your orientation.
Students who receive a “U” math score, will be required to attend an on-campus testing date prior to their scheduled orientation program.

Mathematics Placement Testing

Do I need to take the Math Placement Test?

You are required to take the Mathematics Skills Assessment unless one of the following is true:

  • You received transfer credit for a specific Ohio State math course (with the exception of Math 1040).
  • You received general or deferred/unknown math credit that has been evaluated by a mathematics counselor exempting you from the assessment (refer to Transfer Credit Center for details)
  • You received your AP Calculus test scores prior to your orientation session, and you received a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AB or BC exam. (You must have an official copy of your AP test scores sent to Ohio State. For details on how to send your scores, contact College Boards' AP Services at 888-225-5427.
  • You received your IB scores and received a score of 4 or higher on the higher level math exam. (You must have an official copy of your IB test scores sent to Ohio State. For details on how to send your scores, contact the IB Program.)

It is strongly recommended you take the Mathematics Skills Assessment if one of the following applies:

  • You took the AP calculus exam and are unable to present a score of 3, 4, or 5 on either of the AB or BC calculus exams at the time of your orientation program.
  • You took the higher level IB math exam and are unable to present a score of 4 or higher at the time of your orientation program.

If you believe you have already submitted information that qualifies for exemption and a Math Test Required checklist item remains on your To Do List, please contact the Orientation & Placement Testing Office.

Why do I have to take the Math Placement Test?

Placement tests help determine the appropriate first course for you to take in Ohio State’s course sequence. You will not be able to schedule math-related courses without math placement test scores. No course credit is given for the test, nor does the test fulfill any math requirements.

When do I take the Math Placement Test?

The earlier the better. Should you fail to complete the test online by the deadline or receive a “U” score, you will be required to take/retake the test on campus. Math placement testing will not be available the day of your orientation program.

See placement testing deadlines toward the bottom of the page.

Please provide yourself with an environment that will give you uninterrupted time and an atmosphere conducive to working math problems. You can only take the online test once!

Students in need of disability services may elect to take the test in person. Contact the Office of Disability Services to make testing arrangements.

How long is the Math Placement Test?

The test has a time limit of 75 minutes. The time remaining will be updated after each question. Please note that time continues to run even if students close the browser window, log off their computer or experience computer problems.

What topics will be covered on the Math Placement Test?

Test B (arithmetic, algebra, and geometry)
ACT math score of 24 or lower (SAT math score of 560 or lower)

Test D (pre-calculus)
ACT math score of 25 or higher (SAT math score of 570 or higher)

Can I prepare for the Math Placement Test?

You are encouraged to review the appropriate topics prior to taking the test.
Study. Review. Practice.
To perform your best, review the sample problems, exam topics, and additional information which can be found on the Department of Mathematics website.
The test is multiple choice with only one correct answer per question. Partial credit is not given.

What can I use when taking the Math Placement Test?

You may use scratch paper, a pencil and a scientific graphing calculator. Calculators with computer symbolic algebra or QWERTY keyboards, such as the TI-89 or TI-92, are not permitted.

You may not use other resources or get assistance. If you get help in any way during the test, the results will be skewed, and you may be placed in a math or science class that is inappropriate for you.

In addition to being stressful, starting in a course for which you are unprepared can have serious negative results: you could receive a low grade or fail the course, which impacts your academic standing and possibly your financial aid, scholarships, and admission into your desired academic program. So get off to a great start, take the assessment as instructed!

How do I take the Math Placement Test?

Have your high school course and grade information handy. During the assessment you will be asked for your high school math courses and semester grades.

Log in to the test using your assigned Ohio State username (lastname.#) and password.
https://buckeyelink3.osu.edu/secure/math

Upon completing the test, press "submit". Make certain to note the placement level code (L, M, N, R, S, T, or U) awarded at the end of the exam.

Students who receive a “U” math score, will be required to attend an on-campus testing date prior to their scheduled orientation program.

How did I do on the Math Placement Test?

When you have completed the online test you will be given a math course code that indicates your placement level and a link for more information about math placement. The advising staff at orientation will use your course code to help you register for the appropriate math and/or science course.

What does my Math Placement Code mean?

Students who receive a “U” math score, will be required to attend an on-campus testing date prior to their scheduled orientation program.

I received a “U”. What do I do now?

In some cases, the online assessment will not be able to give you a math placement level. If this happens, you will be given a placement level U (undetermined) instead of a math course code. If your placement level is undetermined you must call 419-755-4203 and register to take an alternative assessment at an on-campus testing session. "U" is not a valid score! Students without a valid math score will not be permitted to attend orientation or schedule classes until a valid score is received. Math placement testing will not be available on the day of orientation.

I have an unreported ACT or SAT math score that would qualify for Test D

Request your scores be submitted to Ohio State immediately and call 419-755-4203. Do not take the test online until these scores have been recorded in university systems.

Have my scores posted to university systems? Check your Advising Report.

I took Test B and was invited to take Test D

If you take Test B and score high enough, the computer system will automatically invite you to take Test D. You must register to take Test D at the on-campus testing session. Call 419-755-4203.

I’m experiencing computer or web browser problems while testing

If you experience computer or web browser problems during the test, return to the site and you should be able to begin where you left off. If you are unable to resume the test, or if time elapsed while you were attempting to restart the test, or if you encounter any other problems with the test, please call the Testing Office in Columbus at 614-292-2241 or esue-testing@osu.edu (weekdays, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.).

  • Netscape version 4.06 or higher or Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher is required.
  • You may use either an IBM-compatible PC or Mac.
  • Many students experience difficulty using AOL. We recommend that you switch to a different browser and do not use AOL for the assessment.

English Placement Testing

Do I need to take the English placement test?

You are not required to take the English Test if any of the following apply:

  1. Your ACT English score (EN) is 19 or higher (less than 3 yrs old)
  2. Your SAT Reading score (EBRW/RWRSN) is 480 or higher (less than 3 yrs old)
  3. You have an AP score of 3 or higher in English Composition
  4. You have college credit for English 1110.01

Official qualifying scores and transcripts must be submitted to be exempt from testing!

If you believe you have already submitted information that qualifies for exemption and the English Test Required checklist item remains on your To Do List, please contact the Orientation & Placement Testing Office.

Why do I have to take the English placement test?

Some course credit in English composition is required for all undergraduate programs at Ohio State.

Placement tests help to determine the appropriate first course for you to take in Ohio State’s course sequence.

No course credit will be given, nor will any English requirements for your chosen major be fulfilled from the English placement test.

What does the English placement test consist of?

The English Placement test consists of reading two prompts, then writing an essay.

How long is the English placement test?

If time expires while you are still completing the assessment, the system will automatically submit what you have saved. If you choose to craft your response in a word processor, make sure you paste and review your response in the text box before time expires. You will have 100 minutes to submit a response.

Carmen automatically submits a quiz after the time limit.

Carmen will submit all answers saved before the time limit. Students will need to save their answers before the time limit expires.

If you find it difficult to write your response within Carmen, you may want to type it in a word processor and copy and paste it into Carmen when you are finished. Just be sure to leave yourself enough time to check the formatting after you move your essay back into Carmen.

You should not consult with nor have anyone else proof read your response.

How did I do on the English placement test?

Your essay will be evaluated by two or more Ohio State Mansfield writing faculty. These faculty will determine the English course you should enroll in. This information will be available to you at orientation.

Testing Criteria

Your essay will be evaluated by two or more Ohio State Mansfield Writing faculty. They will be looking for:

  • Comprehension of the articles as demonstrated in your summary.
  • A claim that is stated clearly. Your claim should reflect your own thoughtful examination of the evidence you provide.
  • Evidence to support your claim. Use specific examples and details from the two readings and from your own experience.
  • Organization of your essay into coherent paragraphs that lead your reader logically through your ideas.
  • Language skill in writing clear, readable English. This includes punctuation, word choice, and style. As much as possible, your essay should be written in standard, edited English. Make necessary editing changes on your draft when you proofread.

Helpful Hints

The following hints may be helpful:

  • You can use the gray triangle in the bottom right corner of the text boxes to enlarge them while writing.
  • If you find it difficult to read and mark up the Carr and Pinker readings within Carmen, you can copy and paste them into a word processor, where you can highlight important passages or type notes to yourself.
  • If you find it difficult to write your response within Carmen, you may want to type it in a word processor and copy and paste it into Carmen when you are finished. Just be sure to leave yourself enough time to check the formatting after you move your essay back into Carmen.

Note: If you use Firefox or another Mozilla product, try using keyboard shortcuts for the Cut, Copy, and Paste commands:

  • Copy: Ctrl+C or Ctrl+Insert (command+C on Mac)
  • Paste: Ctrl+V or Shift+Insert (command+V on Mac)
  • Cut: Ctrl+X or Shift+Delete (command+X on Mac)

  • Most students take about 30 minutes to read and make notes for themselves and then write for about an hour.
  • You may write notes or outlines on blank paper or type them in a blank Word document. Take your time in figuring out what you want to say and the order in which you want to say it. Save some time at the end to re-read what you've written and to make any necessary additions or corrections.
  • Longer essays are not necessarily better essays, but successful placement essays generally include lots of details and evidence.
