Empowering and Engaging Diverse Perspectives: A P-16 Approach


On Saturday, April 13, 2013, The Ohio State University at Mansfield and the Office of Multicultural Affairs will host its one-day conference “Empowering and Engaging Diverse Perspectives: A P-16 Approach” to encourage discussion and critical thinking on issues of diversity and inclusion in the P-16 educational pipeline. Conference sessions will share both research findings as well as practical, pedagogical practices that support the inclusion and academic success of culturally and linguistically diverse students at all K-12 grades and post-secondary levels. The types of diversity and inclusion issues to be addressed include, but are not limited to, issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, religion, sexual orientation, language, and disability, and we propose an innovative P-16 format that will allow dialogue between educators and researchers at all grade levels as well as across disciplinary areas of expertise.

Scope

The intent of this conference is to attract educators in every level of the educational system, including post-secondary. The conference theme and publicity also will express the importance of exposing students to critical examinations of race, ethnicity, class, faith, gender, sexual orientation, language, and disability, and troubling assumptions about these issues, through the education pipeline. In addition, the conference presentations will permit participants to better understand the kinds of diversity present in our classrooms and how to enact culturally responsive, socially just, and academically sound (and successful) pedagogies.


Conference Objectives

  • To provide current and future educators with research based approaches to diversity and inclusion inside and outside classroom environments;

  • To engage current and future educators in discussion of ways to support and connect inclusion and diversity to the classroom experiences of students on a daily basis;

  • To promote dialogue about issues of diversity between educators in various disciplines as well as across grade-level specializations;

  • To share with current and future educators best practices on ways to incorporate diversity and inclusion in the classroom curriculum at all levels; and

  • To raise awareness of issues of diversity and inclusion in the educational pipeline and the impact these issues have on the success of students.
