Dear Ohio State Mansfield Colleagues,
Steady readers of these Bi-Weekly Reports undoubtedly will have noticed a rather heavy emphasis on resource stewardship issues as of late. For this report, I am happy to refocus attention instead on research issues on the Mansfield campus. As you know from our Campus Implementation Plan (CIP):
“Research and Innovation are essential to the intellectual and pedagogical growth of faculty and students. Faculty should demonstrate the value and relevance of their scholarship in their interactions with students, and should involve students, insofar as their discipline permits, in undergraduate and graduate research. To achieve these ends and promote the One-University model, faculty should receive necessary support for their research from their campus and help in leveraging our own resources through productive partnerships with colleagues and departments in Columbus.”
Within the Research and Innovation section of our CIP, our campus has created the position of Assistant Dean in order to enhance the culture of discovery among faculty, students, and staff (2.1.A)., Terri Fisher’s efforts since assuming this role in January of this year have been consistently centering greater concentration on research-related activities. One very recent example occurred this past Friday, when the very first Regional Research Resource Retreat (R4) was held on the Mansfield campus for a group of approximately 50 faculty members from all four regional campuses. Speakers for this event from the Columbus campus included:
- Jan Weisenberger, Senior Associate Vice President for Research Administration, who spoke on OSU resources for regional faculty
- Jeff Agnoli, Senior Staff Training and Development Specialist in the Office of Research, who covered tools to identify research funding
- Chad Harper, Program Officer in the Office of Sponsored Programs, who discussed pre-award and post-award topics (Chad is responsible for managing grants for faculty on all four regional campuses)
- Tani Prestage, Senior IRB Protocol Analyst in the Office of Responsible Research Practices, and Joni Barnard, Education Resource Specialist in the same office, who together discussed issues surrounding responsible research practices with human subjects
- Allison Snow, Director of the Undergraduate Research Office, who discussed her office’s role in the support of student involvement in research activities
In addition to these speakers, our campus also hosted a lunch in the Eisenhower Cafeteria that allowed participants to sit with the speaker of his/her choice in order to continue the dialogues initiated by the presentations. Lunch was then followed by a range of small group discussions that included topics such as making time for research on the regional campuses, support and resources for research in the arts and humanities, collaboration in Environmental and Natural Sciences, advances in research technology and data software, and regional campus collaboration on research endeavors.
While Terri is in the process of gathering data on participation satisfaction with the day’s events, there already is a great deal of anecdotal evidence that the research retreat was a smashing success. There was a steady stream of supportive comments made throughout the morning’s presentations, and the positive vibration felt during the course of lunch was quite palpable. Add to this the fact that Greg Rose, Dean and Director for the Marion campus, noted his great pleasure in seeing how the day had progressed, and indicated that he would be delighted to host the next research retreat.
