Expertise: Women's Rhetoric History of Rhetoric Composition Theory and Practice
Carolyn Skinner teaches courses in writing, rhetoric (the study of persuasion), Writing Center theory and practice, and the history of rhetoric. Her research examines the persuasive speech and writing of nineteenth-century American women, particularly women who pursued medical or scientific careers. She has published "'The Purity of Truth': Nineteenth-Century American Women Physicians Write about Delicate Topics" in Rhetoric Review (2007) and "'She Will Have Science': Ethos and Audience in Mary Gove's Lectures to Ladies" in Rhetoric Society Quarterly (2009).
