I was born in Kansas and have lived there and Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, and Ohio in the U.S. I also have lived in American Samoa, Tanzania, and South Africa and traveled extensively abroad. Before entering higher education, I was an elementary classroom teacher for eight years in Virginia and New York. I have been at Ohio State since 1986, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in children's literature and literacy education. Professional involvement has included co-editorship of The Journal of Children's Literature, published by the Children's Literature Assembly of the National Council of Teachers of English, and of Bookbird: A Journal of International Children's Literature, published by the International Board on Books for Young People (Basel, Switzerland). I am co-editor of one book, Teaching with Children's Books: Paths to Literature-based Instruction (NCTE, 1995), co-author of another book, Global Perspectives in Children's Literature (Allyn & Bacon, 2001), and author of Children's Literature and Learning: Literary Study across the Curriculum (Teachers College Press, 2007). My latest book, co-authored with Evelyn Freeman and Patricia Scharer, is titled Reading Globally, K_8: Connecting Students to the World Through Literature, to be published by Corwin Press in 2010. During 2004-2005, I was a Fulbright professor in Cape Town, South Africa.
