Course Objectives: This course will provide the non-major with a broad base of biological understanding so that s/he can function knowledgeably in today's world.
Course Content: This course includes the major concepts and principles of biology and their interactions. These include, but are not limited to, the definition of "life", cell function (metabolism, reproduction), genetics and heredity, evolution, diversity of life, ecology, and behavior.
Method of Presentation: Lecture and lab may be integrated or conducted at separate times but equivalent material will be presented. Class: lecture and discussion using the chalkboard and videodisc. Lab: individual and small group hands-on exercises. Lab is a time to witness processes as well as to observe live and preserved organisms that are discussed in lecture. Videotapes are shown in lab to more fully visualize aspects not easily reproduced in class or lab exercises.
Method of Evaluation: Quizzes (6); Midterm (3), Final Exam (approximately 1/3 of this is cumulative).
