Course Objectives: By the end of the course, the student should exhibit a working knowledge of ceramic hand-forming processes and materials. Students will demonstrate an awareness of sculptural space, as well as the history and evolution of ceramics as it relates to the studio artist.
Course Content: This course introduces the student to the plastic earths, and their use as sculptural media. It will cover construction methods, glazing, firing kilns (loading, firing, unloading, cleaning) and presentation of hand-built ceramic sculptural forms.
Method of Presentation: The class is a studio practicum, but there will also be lectures, demonstrations and presentations. Individual consultation with the instructional unit is a regular feature of the class. Critiques are personal, and group oriented, and will be announced for every assignment.
Method of Evaluation: Evaluation is based on completion and presentation of assignments, improvement, and overall disposition of completed artwork. Additional criteria include attendance and contribution to classroom dynamic.
