Course Objectives: This course will introduce the basic concepts of poetic composition and orient you to some of the most popular forms and genres of poetry. While much of our time will be spent writing and workshopping our own poems, we will also do a fair amount of reading from the canon of English verse in order to gain insight into the traditions with which we are engaging. No prior creative writing experience is required or expected; all you need is a willingness to share and an open mind. A friendly note of caution: participation is a very big part of this course, so if you are shy about talking in front of your peers, this class will not be a good fit for you.
Method of Presentation: Regular writing assignments, a final portfolio and a presentation. The course requires that students have regular (daily) email access and participate very actively in in-class workshops.
