Course Objectives: to acquaint students with Africa's diverse geography, people and culture; to provide students with broad and useful knowledge about Africa's historical past; to examine the interrelationships between Africa, Europe, and the Americas during the trans-Atlantic Slave Trade; to introduce students to important historical and contemporary issues such as the slave trade and slavery, ethnicity, race, class, gender, education, and politics
Course Content: supplementary reading in closed reserve, Bromfield Library -- Crossing the danger water: three hundred years of African-American writing, Mullane Deirdre
Method of Presentation: this course is primarily based on lectures, discussions, and films. weekly readings will be provided, and it is important that students must read the materials before the lectures. students will be expected to attend classes regularly in order to keep us with the course. students are encouraged to participate effectiely in discussion sessions.
Method of Evaluation: the final grade in this course will be based on the following criteria: three quizzes - 5 points each; a term paper - 9-page, double-spaced; mid-term exam; final exam; class attendance and discussion
