Course Objectives: To prepare students for success in English 110: First-Year Composition. Students will practice reading text and images analytically and writing coherent responses to what they read and see.
Course Content: English 109.01 requires substantial reading and writing. Readings from the textbook (The Writer's Eye, Editor William Costanzo -- ISBN 978-0-07-237260-1 amd The DK Handbook, Editors Anne Frances Wysocki and Dennis A. Lynch, ISBN 978-321-42053-4) and other sources will lead to drafts and revisions of three major assignments, including a researched essay. This class emphasizes visual as well as verbal literacy.
Method of Presentation: Rather than lecture, this course emphasizes a hands-on approach in which students respond to comments on their drafts, and to discussions in class.
Method of Evaluation: A portfolio of revised essays, plus class participation and daily work. Some students will be able, with an excellent portfolio and progress during the quarter, to proceed directly to English 110 the following quarter rather than take English 109.02
