Course Objectives: To increase students' familiarity and comfort with the conventions of written English grammar and usage. To learn how grammatical choices affect the way a piece of writing is received by readers. To learn strategies for talking with other writers about their grammatical choices. (Possible objective, depending on student interest.)
Course Content: In English 4572, we will study the conventions of written English grammar and usage. Students will practice identifying parts of sentences and articulating how they work together. The class will not be limited to learning “the rules,” however; we will also explore how the decisions a writer makes in putting together sentences affects the style, tone, and persuasiveness of the sentence. Depending on student interest, we may also spend time discussing how to teach grammar to others.
Method of Presentation: Reading, lecture, discussion, and practice exercises.
Method of Evaluation: Two midterms and a final exam. Possibly also a brief in-class presentation.
